The resulting soundtrack is a fusion of traditional Celtic influences with cinematic grandeur, capturing the spirit of Ale & Axes while honoring its medieval fantasy setting. We began by composing the Tavern Theme, the central piece of the soundtrack. This melody, unmistakably Irish, was brought to life with the help of violinist Jasper van Rosmalen from the Metropole Orchestra. His expressive violin playing, combined with traditional Irish instruments like flutes and bouzouki, along with layered percussion, created a rich and authentic sound that instantly transports players to the heart of the tavern—a place brimming with adventure and camaraderie.
As the game shifts to darker, more intense moments, the music evolves with the Dungeon Theme. Here, we took the central Tavern Theme and reinterpreted it, adding powerful drums, dramatic staccato strings, and a bold, heroic energy to elevate the intensity. To help convey this transformation, we worked with cellist Jonas Pap, whose rhythmic cello lines drove the darker, more urgent tone. Jasper’s violin, too, shifted, moving from bright and playful to a more dramatic, battle-ready sound, giving the track a powerful and epic quality.
Both pieces, though vastly different in tone, are linked by the central melody, which remains a constant thread throughout the game. The variations of this theme appear in various parts of the game, whether during peaceful moments in the menu or during intense action scenes, always maintaining the emotional core while adapting to the mood of each moment.
Through this collaboration, we created a soundtrack that doesn’t just accompany the game, but becomes an integral part of the storytelling. It was an incredible experience to bring Ale & Axes to life through music, and we hope the soundscape we crafted enhances every player's adventure in this fantasy world.
