Eclectic sound design that channels Julia De Blaauw's vibrant creative essence.

Challenge
For Julia de Blaauw, a multidisciplinary art director and designer, we composed the soundtrack to her first reel. At its core, the concept was straightforward: an authentic representation of Julia’s distinctive professional self. Since her projects are so diverse, the idea was to rapidly flip through her work like channel surfing with a remote. In motion, this is represented by a rapid editing pace that mixes film, photography, and various methods of animation. We had to match these different styles and tie them together with music in order to make something authentic and cohesive.
Output
We collaborated closely, and started off by getting to know her favorite musical artists. She compiled a playlist that ranged from ‘90s hip-hop and Kraftwerk to jazz and ambient soundscapes. This gave us a great range of different styles to match her different projects. We matched the sound design to the tempo of the visual elements and pinpointed several moments where we felt the music had to change completely, like switching tv channels. We created a synthesizer called the ‘kuiken-stamper’ (chicklet-masher) to capture that creepy-but-cute voice during the intro. This all resulted in a unique voice characterized by eclectic design, dynamic motion, and a vibrant sound with a personal touch.

Keys of Wonder

Warm and freely played, the piano flows through chords chosen for their feel rather than a set key. Its rising melody bridges chapters with a sense of wonder.

Shaping the Scene

Quirky yet central to the track, each chapter has its own texture, reflecting Julia’s many sides. Organic field recordings, snappy accents and minimal ambience work together to create a coherent feel.

Driving the Moment

Bold and tight, the closing drums match confidence. Rhythmic hits sync with the animation for snap and a rising percussive pitch builds tension towards a sharp, final release.
