Cinematic sound design weaving tension and texture for Van Gogh's vibrant tale.

Challenge
We were asked to create the sound design for the Van Gogh Museum's new campaign, "The Colour Heist." It’s a three-part series crafted as if it were a Netflix true crime documentary, where both the music and sound work together to build tension.
Output
We began by re-composing the score and adding additional layers to the music, creating a more true-crime vibe. The sound design needed to be more tangible, capturing the essence of real paper recorded at close range so that all the papery textures and details could be distinctly heard. Together with the music, it forms a perfect balance between cinematic and highly detailed elements.

Recording foley and textures

We turned our studio into a mini sound lab — boxes dragged, paper crumpled, tape peeled, pencils scratched, hay rustled. Over 100 sounds, recorded up close.

Real Cassette Recording

Some parts of the film needed an old cassette feel in the voiceover, so we recorded those sections through an actual cassette tape to capture that authentic, warm, lo-fi character.

Additional Music Layers

For this film, we also composed and layered additional music on top of the existing score, to more closely connect the story with its sounds.
